Gearbox oil lubricates the moving components inside your MINI’s manual gearbox, reduces friction and absorbs heat and fine wear particles. As the mileage increases, the oil ages and may lose its original properties. Replacing it in good time supports smooth gear changes and helps prevent unnecessary wear inside the gearbox.
Why old gearbox oil can become a problem
Even if a fixed replacement interval is not included in the maintenance schedule for a particular MINI gearbox, the oil does not remain unchanged indefinitely. Temperature changes, mechanical loads and wear particles affect its lubricating properties over time.
- Maintaining proper lubrication: The correct gearbox oil protects gears, bearings, shafts and synchroniser rings from unnecessary friction.
- Supporting smooth gear changes: Fresh oil can help the gears engage more evenly and precisely.
- Removing wear particles: An oil change removes contamination and fine metal particles suspended in the old oil.
- Dissipating heat: The oil absorbs some of the heat generated inside the gearbox and helps protect its components.
When is a gearbox oil change advisable?
The appropriate replacement interval depends on the manual gearbox fitted, the mileage and how the vehicle is used. As a general workshop recommendation, changing the oil approximately every 80.000 to 100.000 kilometres can be worthwhile.
- At higher mileage: If the gearbox oil has never been changed, an inspection is worthwhile even if there are currently no noticeable problems.
- With an unknown service history: After buying a used MINI, it is often unclear when the gearbox oil was last replaced.
- When gear changes become difficult: Notchy shifting or a change in how the gearbox feels may be related to old, unsuitable or insufficient oil.
- When unusual noises occur: Grinding, whining or rattling noises should be investigated before further damage develops.
- When oil loss is visible: If the gearbox is leaking, the cause must first be identified before the correct oil level is restored.
How we carry out the gearbox oil change
We change gearbox oil on MINI models from every generation with a manual gearbox. The required oil and fill quantity depend on the gearbox installed. We only use gearbox oil that meets the relevant manufacturer specification.

- Identify the installed manual gearbox and required oil specification
- Inspect the gearbox for visible leaks
- Drain the old gearbox oil
- Inspect the drained oil for unusual wear particles or metal fragments
- Inspect the drain and fill plugs
- Replace sealing rings and damaged plugs where necessary
- Fill the gearbox with the specified oil in the correct quantity
- Check the gearbox for leaks again after the oil change
What you should know beforehand
An oil change is not a gearbox repair: Fresh gearbox oil may improve shifting if old, incorrect or insufficient oil is causing the problem. However, it cannot repair worn synchroniser rings, faulty bearings, damaged gears or other mechanical gearbox damage.
If your MINI is already difficult to shift, jumps out of gear or produces unusual noises, we check whether an oil change is sufficient or whether further diagnosis or a gearbox overhaul is required.
Time and cost: A gearbox oil change usually takes around two to three hours. The cost depends on the gearbox fitted, the required quantity of oil, accessibility and any additional work needed. We therefore do not quote a fixed total price.
