Difficult gear changes, gears jumping out, grinding noises or oil leaks can indicate a problem with your MINI’s transmission. We check whether the transmission is actually the cause and whether a repair, a refurbished replacement transmission or another solution makes the most technical and economic sense.
Engine and transmission overhauls are among Miniparts24’s main areas of expertise. A professional overhaul is often worthwhile, especially for older MINIs, when the vehicle’s condition and the required repair are a good match. We always need the complete 17-character vehicle identification number to identify the correct components.
Typical signs of transmission problems
- Gears are difficult to engage: Stiff gear changes or gears that can only be selected with force may be caused by the transmission, clutch or gear linkage.
- Gears jump out while driving: Wear in the synchronisers, gear teeth, selector mechanism or bearings can prevent an engaged gear from staying securely in place.
- Whining, grinding or cracking noises: Noises under load, while coasting or in neutral can indicate worn bearings, gears or other components.
- Vibrations or excessive play: Not every knock comes from the transmission. Driveshafts, engine and transmission mounts or the clutch may also be responsible.
- Transmission oil is leaking: Leaking shaft seals, sealing surfaces or damaged housings can cause a loss of lubrication and subsequently serious consequential damage.
The symptoms alone are not enough to identify the transmission as the cause with certainty. An inspection helps avoid replacing a transmission when the actual problem is, for example, the clutch, selector cables, mounts or drivetrain.
Your MINI is no longer driveable? Do not continue driving unnecessarily if there are loud noises, blocked gears or significant oil loss. Collection can be arranged in advance through our pick-up and delivery service.
Repair, overhaul or replacement transmission?
The right solution depends on the transmission type and the damage. A targeted repair may be possible when wear is limited. For more extensive damage, a professionally refurbished replacement transmission is often easier to plan. If an economical overhaul is not possible, we will check suitable alternatives.
The package prices below apply to the listed manual transmissions and the intended basic scope. Automatic transmissions, other MINI series and different transmission variants are calculated individually using the vehicle identification number and the inspection findings.
Typical scope of work
The exact scope is defined in the repair order. A transmission replacement typically includes the following steps:
- Inspection of gear selection, noises, leaks and known faults
- Clear identification of the installed transmission using the vehicle identification number, transmission code and vehicle data
- Removal of the existing transmission and inspection of adjacent components
- Installation of the agreed repaired or refurbished transmission
- Filling with suitable transmission oil as part of the agreed transmission work
- Inspection and, where required, adjustment of the gear linkage, followed by a final function check and road test
Not automatically included in the basic price
- Dual-mass flywheel, release bearing, clutch hydraulics or other components outside the listed clutch offer
- Damage to driveshafts, gear linkage, engine and transmission mounts or other adjacent components
- Additional work caused by damaged fasteners, leaks or existing consequential damage
- Pick-up and delivery, a replacement car and other additionally requested services
Have the clutch checked at the same time: Much of the required labour must be carried out anyway to remove the transmission. If the clutch is already worn, replacing it during the same repair can avoid additional workshop costs later. We check its condition and agree any additional parts with you in advance.

Deposit, transport and warranty: A 25 % deposit is required for orders with expected costs above 1.500 € and for special orders. Collection and return transport are not included in the price and are calculated separately. Used and refurbished parts fitted by us carry a 12-month warranty period. The conditions agreed in the repair order apply; further information is available under warranty and wear and tear.
How the transmission work is carried out
- Send your request: Provide the complete 17-character vehicle identification number, registration number and the most accurate description possible of the shifting problem. You can upload photos, videos and diagnostic reports directly.
- Inspect the vehicle and symptoms: We identify the transmission variant and check whether the problem actually comes from the transmission or an adjacent component.
- Agree the repair solution: Depending on the findings, we recommend a repair, a refurbished replacement transmission or another technically sensible solution.
- Approve additional work: If the clutch, flywheel, mounts or other parts show additional wear, we inform you about the scope and cost before carrying out the work.
- Installation and final inspection: Once you approve the work, we carry it out as agreed and check gear selection, leaks and driving behaviour.
Frequently asked questions about transmission overhauls
Possible signs include difficult gear changes, gears jumping out, whining or grinding noises, vibrations and transmission oil leaks. Similar symptoms may also be caused by the clutch, gear linkage, bearings or driveshafts. A technical inspection helps identify the actual cause.
That depends on the transmission variant and the damage. A targeted repair may be possible when wear is limited. For more extensive damage, a professionally refurbished replacement transmission is often easier to plan. We agree the recommended solution with you after the inspection.
Package prices for selected manual transmissions start at 1.199 € including VAT. The final price depends on the transmission variant, the damage and any additional parts required. Automatic transmissions and MINI models not listed are calculated individually.
If the clutch is already worn, replacing both at the same time is usually sensible because the transmission must be removed anyway. For the listed packages, the clutch can be added during the same repair for 175 €. Other components, such as the dual-mass flywheel, release bearing or hydraulics, are not automatically included.
No. The table applies only to the explicitly listed manual transmissions. Automatic and other transmission variants are inspected and calculated individually using the vehicle identification number and the actual fault symptoms.
Yes. Collection can be arranged in advance through our pick-up and delivery service. The cost depends on the distance and required transport and is calculated separately.
Request an inspection of your MINI’s transmission
Send us the complete vehicle identification number and describe as precisely as possible in which gear, at what speed and under which operating conditions the problem occurs. This allows us to identify the vehicle and transmission correctly and agree the next steps with you.
