The oil in an automatic transmission lubricates and cools numerous moving components and, in certain transmission types, also transfers hydraulic pressure. As the mileage increases, the oil becomes affected by heat, wear particles and other residues. A professionally performed automatic transmission flush replaces a considerably larger proportion of the old oil than a simple drain and refill. This can help maintain smooth shifting and proper transmission lubrication.

Why can an automatic transmission flush be worthwhile?

During a flush, a specialised machine displaces the old transmission oil from the oil circuit and replaces it with suitable new oil. This leaves less old oil inside the transmission than a conventional drain and refill.

• Replacing old transmission oil: Aged oil contaminated by wear particles is removed from the transmission circuit as thoroughly as possible.
• Maintaining proper lubrication: The specified new oil supports the transmission’s lubrication, cooling and hydraulic functions.
• Supporting smooth shifting: If old or contaminated oil is causing the problem, gear changes may become smoother after the flush.
• Assessing the condition: The colour, smell and possible residues in the old oil can provide information about the condition of the transmission.

When do we recommend a transmission flush?

The appropriate maintenance interval depends on the transmission type, mileage and how your MINI is used. As a general workshop recommendation, an automatic transmission flush can be worthwhile approximately every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometres. The suitable interval may differ depending on the transmission and manufacturer specifications.

• At the appropriate mileage: If the transmission oil has never been changed or flushed, it is advisable to inspect its condition.
• With an unknown service history: After buying a used MINI, it is often unclear when the automatic transmission was last serviced.
• When shifting behaviour changes: Jerking, delayed engagement of a drive position or unusually harsh gear changes may indicate a problem.
• When unusual noises occur: Grinding, whining or other unfamiliar noises should be assessed before carrying out a flush.
• After prolonged heavy use: Frequent short journeys, a sporty driving style or high thermal loads can place additional strain on the transmission oil.

How the automatic transmission flush is performed

We flush the different automatic, CVT and dual-clutch transmissions fitted to MINI models. The exact procedure, required oil quantity and oil specification depend on the transmission installed.

• Identify the vehicle and transmission details
• Read the vehicle and transmission fault memory
• Carry out a test drive to assess shifting behaviour
• Inspect the transmission and connections for visible leaks
• Check the condition of the existing transmission oil
• Connect the flushing machine and displace the old oil from the circuit
• Fill with the correct transmission oil according to manufacturer specifications
• Set the oil level under the conditions specified for the particular transmission
• Reset or relearn adaptation values where specified for the transmission
• Perform a final inspection and test drive

Depending on the transmission type and the condition of the old oil, more than one flushing cycle may be required. This is not determined solely by the MINI model, but by the actual condition of the oil and how the flushing process progresses.

What you should know beforehand

Cleaning agents are not used automatically: We normally use the oil specified for the particular transmission. An additional cleaning agent is only used after consultation when it is expressly requested and technically appropriate.

A flush is not a transmission repair: It may improve shifting if aged or contaminated oil is causing the problem. However, it cannot repair worn clutch packs, faulty mechatronics or mechanical transmission damage.

If there are severe shifting problems, slipping clutches, persistent limp mode or unusual mechanical noises, we first determine whether a flush is appropriate or whether further diagnosis or a transmission overhaul is required.

Time and cost: An automatic transmission flush usually takes around three to four hours and costs from 499 €. The final price depends on the transmission type, the required oil quantity, the number of flushing cycles and the actual amount of work involved. Additional parts and repairs are charged separately and discussed with you beforehand.
