The chassis number identifies your MINI as an individual vehicle. Its official name is the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, and it consists of 17 characters. Depending on the country, you can find it on the vehicle registration document, in the MINI App and in several locations on the vehicle itself.
When searching for suitable spare parts, the complete VIN is far more reliable than the model, year or registration number alone. The engine, transmission, equipment and individual components can change several times within a single MINI model series.

What is a VIN or chassis number?
The official term is Vehicle Identification Number, abbreviated to VIN. Chassis number is the commonly used alternative term. For the modern BMW-MINI models covered by Miniparts24, both terms refer to the same 17-character identifier.
A VIN consists of capital letters and numbers. The letters I, O and Q are not used, preventing confusion with 1 and 0. Spaces and hyphens are not part of the number either.
Many European BMW MINIs have the manufacturer identifier WMW at the beginning. Never construct a VIN yourself or fill in missing characters from this example. Always use the complete number shown on the vehicle registration document or the vehicle itself.
Take care when copying the VIN: If a character looks like the letter O, it is the number 0. What appears to be an I is usually the number 1. Copy the VIN directly from the official vehicle document whenever possible.
Where can I find my MINI’s VIN?
The easiest source is usually the official vehicle registration document. On registration certificates issued in many European countries, the complete VIN appears in field E. The name and field used on documents outside Europe can vary.

- MINI App: Under vehicle information when the car is correctly linked
- Windscreen: Depending on the model, visible from outside through the lower part of the windscreen
- Engine compartment: Permanently engraved or stamped into the vehicle body
- Identification plate or door opening: Depending on the model and market, on a plate attached to the side of the vehicle or in a door jamb
The exact location on the vehicle varies between MINI generations and national-market versions. A number stored in or printed on a replacement control unit or used component is not necessarily your vehicle’s VIN. If in doubt, compare the official registration document with the number permanently attached to the vehicle body.
What does VIN-7 mean for BMW and MINI?
Within BMW and MINI, VIN-7 refers to the last seven characters of the complete VIN. Workshops and parts suppliers often use this shortened section for a quick search in internal systems and parts catalogues.
VIN-7 is not a second chassis number and does not replace the complete 17-character VIN. It omits the manufacturer identifier and part of the vehicle description.
For an enquiry to Miniparts24: Send the complete 17-character VIN unless the relevant form specifically asks for VIN-7. This avoids additional questions and allows us to identify the vehicle more reliably.
Why is “2010 MINI R56” not enough?
The model series and year only narrow a vehicle down roughly. Different engines, transmissions, braking systems, control units, wiring looms and equipment variants can exist within a single model year. Technical changes can also be introduced during an ongoing production period.
Using the VIN, suitable BMW-/MINI-systems can identify information such as the exact vehicle type, production date and factory-recorded equipment. This makes it possible to narrow down the parts search far more accurately.

For a reliable parts check, the best combination is the complete VIN, any available part number and clear photographs of the removed component.
Can a licence plate be used instead of the VIN?
This depends on the country. Some national databases allow general vehicle data to be retrieved using a registration number, while others provide little or no public information. These systems are country-specific and do not provide a reliable international replacement for the VIN.
Miniparts24 is based in Germany and processes international vehicle and parts enquiries using the complete VIN. If you send only a registration number, we will normally ask you for the 17-character VIN from your vehicle documents.

What the VIN does not tell you
The VIN mainly describes the vehicle’s original factory configuration. It does not reliably show which components have since been replaced, retrofitted, modified or taken from another vehicle. It cannot reveal the current technical condition of your MINI either.
- Aftermarket suspension, brakes, audio systems or tuning components
- Used control units or other previously replaced components
- Conversions that have not been recorded in the vehicle data
- Wear, damage or the actual maintenance condition
A vehicle compatibility list therefore remains a selection aid even after a VIN check. For critical or previously replaced components, the part number, connectors, dimensions and photographs must also be compared.
How to send the VIN correctly
- Check the official document: Find the full VIN on the vehicle registration document.
- Copy all 17 characters: Do not leave out any characters or add spaces and hyphens.
- Check the characters: Pay particular attention to 0 and 1. The letters I, O and Q do not occur in a VIN.
- Add your enquiry: Name the required spare part or describe the technical problem as precisely as possible.
- Include photographs and the part number: This is especially important for repaired or modified vehicles.
Is a VIN secret?
A VIN is not a password, but it uniquely identifies your vehicle. Send it directly to the parts supplier or workshop that needs it to process your enquiry. Avoid publishing the complete number unnecessarily in public comments, adverts or openly visible social-media posts.
If only the VIN is required, you do not automatically need to send an unredacted photograph of the entire registration document. It may contain additional personal information such as your name and address. Information on how we process submitted data is available in our privacy policy.
What if two VINs do not match?
If the VIN on the vehicle registration document does not match the number permanently attached to the body, stop the parts order until the discrepancy has been checked. First make sure that you have read the correct number and not an identification plate, sticker or marking on a replaced component.
If the difference remains, it needs professional investigation. A workshop can check the identification locations on the vehicle. If the error appears to be in the registration documents, contact the vehicle registration authority in the country where the car is registered.
