Left and right on a vehicle are always determined in the direction of travel. Imagine that you are sitting in the MINI and looking through the windscreen: anything on your left is on the vehicle’s left-hand side, while anything on your right is on its right-hand side. If you stand in front of the MINI, the two sides appear reversed from your perspective.
This rule applies to headlights, rear lights, door mirrors, doors, wings, brakes, suspension components and all other parts that have separate left- and right-hand versions.
What do left and right mean on a MINI?
The viewpoint is always that of someone sitting in the vehicle and looking forwards. The MINI’s left-hand side is then on the left and its right-hand side is on the right. It does not matter which direction you are facing when you look at the vehicle from outside.
The simple rule: Imagine sitting in the MINI and looking forwards. Your left hand points towards the vehicle’s left-hand side and your right hand towards its right-hand side.
Why looking from the front often causes confusion
If you stand in front of the MINI and look towards the windscreen, the vehicle’s left-hand side appears on your right. This is precisely why headlights, mirrors, wings and other side-specific parts are often ordered incorrectly.
- Left headlight: On a left-hand-drive MINI, this is on the driver’s side. When you stand in front of the MINI, you see it on your right.
- Right headlight: On a left-hand-drive MINI, this is on the passenger side. When you stand in front of the MINI, you see it on your left.
- Left rear light: It remains the left rear light even when you stand behind the MINI and look directly at it.
- Front right: This means the vehicle’s right-hand side at the front axle or in the front section – not the right-hand side from the perspective of someone standing in front of the MINI.
Driver’s side and passenger side are not always unambiguous
On a left-hand-drive MINI, the driver’s side is on the left and the passenger side is on the right. On a right-hand-drive MINI, the opposite applies. The terms “driver’s side” and “passenger side” are therefore unsuitable for identifying a part unless it is also clear which side the steering wheel is on.
When making an enquiry or placing an order, use the unambiguous descriptions left, right, front left, front right, rear left or rear right.
What do L, R, LH, RH, FL, FR, RL and RR mean?
Positions are often abbreviated on parts, packaging, technical drawings and in vehicle catalogues. The exact notation can vary between manufacturers and suppliers.

- Drive shafts, axle components and vehicle-specific pipes or hoses
- Interior trim, seat components and side-specific panels
How to avoid ordering the wrong part
- Establish the direction of travel: Determine left and right as if you were sitting in the MINI and looking forwards.
- Give the complete position: Add front or rear where necessary.
- Compare the part number: Check any BMW/MINI part numbers and known cross-reference numbers.
- Check connectors and equipment: Lights, mirrors, door components and electronics in particular can differ within the same model generation.
- Ask before ordering if you are unsure: Send us the complete 17-character vehicle identification number, a photo of the required or removed part and, where available, the part number printed on it.
Important: A vehicle application list or the description “suitable for R56” is not always sufficient. Parts can vary within the same model generation because of the engine, production period, equipment and technical revisions. We therefore need the complete vehicle identification number for a reliable compatibility check.
