The engine code identifies the engine family or a specific engine version fitted to your MINI. Details such as “MINI Cooper S”, “R56” or “2010 model” are not always sufficient. Different engines can be installed within the same model series and sales designation depending on the production date, power output, fuel type and market.

For engine-related replacement parts, the combination of the complete Vehicle Identification Number, production date and actual engine code is therefore essential. If a replacement engine has been fitted, you must also establish which engine is currently in the vehicle.

What is an engine code?

In everyday use, the term engine code can refer to two different identifiers. It often means only the short engine family, such as W11, N14, N18 or B48. The complete engine designation can contain additional characters, for example N18B16A or B36A15M0.

Depending on the BMW naming system, the additional characters can describe the fuel type, nominal displacement class and development version. These systems changed between generations. A modern B-series engine designation must therefore not be decoded using exactly the same rules as an older W- or N-series designation.

N14 and N18 are engine families, not individual engines. Different power, emissions and development variants exist within one family. The short designation alone is therefore not always sufficient when ordering parts.

Why “MINI Cooper S R56” is not sufficient

The MINI Cooper S R56 initially used a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing 175 hp. A technically revised 184 hp version with fully variable valve control followed. Within the parts trade, these versions are generally associated with the N14 and N18 engine families.

The change cannot be identified reliably using the date of first registration or power output alone. A vehicle may be registered some time after it was produced, markets can differ and John Cooper Works versions sometimes follow separate production periods. The actual production date and vehicle data are decisive.

Turbochargers, high-pressure pumps, injectors, valve covers, timing-chain components, sensors and ancillary parts can differ even within one engine family. Never use this table as the sole basis for ordering a part.

Why B36 and B46 are not automatically errors

Engine codes for more recent MINI models can differ by market and emissions requirements. Official North American MINI specifications, for example, list B36A15M0 for a 1.5-litre three-cylinder and B46A20M0 for a 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The technically related B38 and B48 families are more commonly encountered on European vehicles.

Do not blindly “translate” B36 into B38 or B46 into B48. These codes can indicate market- and emissions-specific versions. The actual vehicle specification must be checked for parts, software and emissions components.

Where can I find my MINI’s engine code?

  • Vehicle lookup using the VIN: The original engine version and production date can be assigned in the relevant BMW and MINI systems.
  • Marking on the engine: Depending on the engine, an identifier may be stamped, engraved or displayed on a plate attached to the engine block.
  • Invoice or documentation: A workshop invoice, delivery note or engine card may state the fitted version if the engine has been replaced.
  • Diagnostic system: Control-unit and vehicle data can provide clues to the engine version, but must be interpreted carefully if the vehicle has been modified.
  • Registration documents: Some countries may record an engine identifier under P.5. The complete MINI engine code is not a reliable standard entry on every country’s vehicle registration document.

The exact location of an engine marking varies considerably. It may be hidden beneath the intake, pipes or other ancillary components and can be difficult to read because of dirt or corrosion. Do not remove safety-critical or fuel-carrying components merely to look for a number.

Can I derive the engine code from the model description?

The model, power output, displacement and year can narrow down the possibilities, but they are not conclusive proof. “Cooper”, “Cooper S” and “John Cooper Works” have been used across several MINI generations. Engines also changed during the production of an individual model series.

The first registration date is not the same as the production date either. A MINI built in December might not be registered until the following spring. Always use the complete VIN rather than relying only on a year stated in an advert.

What does N18B16A mean, for example?

In the designation N18B16A, N18 represents the engine family. Within this older BMW system, B indicates a petrol engine, 16 refers to the approximate 1.6-litre displacement class and the final letter identifies a version or development level.

This interpretation must not be applied to every other BMW or MINI engine code without checking it. The letters and numbers occupy different positions in the newer B-series engine codes and can distinguish additional market, output or emissions variants.

Replacement engines: the VIN may not match the installed engine

A VIN lookup primarily shows the vehicle’s original factory specification. If the engine was replaced later, the vehicle may now contain a different development version or, after a conversion, even a different engine family.

  • Check invoices and documentation relating to the engine replacement.
  • Photograph any identifiers on the replacement engine.
  • Compare ancillary components, plugs, sensors and control units.
  • Explicitly state that the engine has been replaced or modified when submitting a parts enquiry.

If the vehicle’s history is unknown: Do not rely exclusively on the VIN or the label on one ancillary component. A high-pressure pump, control unit or valve cover may previously have been replaced separately.

  • Valve cover, gaskets and crankcase ventilation
  • Turbocharger, exhaust manifold and charge-air components
  • High-pressure pump, injectors and fuel system
  • Sensors, ignition system and engine management
  • Engine mounts, belt drive, cooling system and ancillary components
  • Complete engines, short engines and engine rebuilds

The engine code improves the selection process but does not replace checking the exact part number. Components can still differ by production date or equipment version within the same engine family.

How to send the correct information

  1. Complete VIN: All 17 characters from the official vehicle registration document.
  2. Model and series: For example, MINI Cooper S R56.
  3. Power and fuel: kW or hp and petrol or diesel.
  4. Engine code: The complete identifier, if available, rather than a fragment.
  5. Part numbers and photographs: Overall view, connections and every readable label or marking.
  6. Replacement or conversion: Explicitly mention every known modification to the engine or ancillary components.

Does a MINI Cooper S R56 always have an N14 engine?

No. Early R56 Cooper S models are generally associated with the N14 and later technically revised versions with the N18. The production period, output and vehicle data must be checked; the first registration date or model name alone is not sufficient.

Are the engine code and engine number the same?

No. The engine code identifies an engine family or version. The engine number identifies one individual manufactured engine. A casting or part number may instead identify only the engine housing or an ancillary component.

Is the VIN sufficient to identify the engine?

The complete VIN is the most important basis for the original factory specification. After an engine replacement or conversion, however, the engine actually installed may differ. Additional identifiers, documentation and photographs are then required.

Do all parts fit every engine within the same family?

No. Components within one engine family can differ according to production date, output, emissions standard, market and technical development level. Check the exact part number and vehicle application as well.
